This course is designed to assist physicians and industry professionals in diagnosing, treating, and optimizing baseball and softball players swings. The baseball and softball swings are highly discussed throughout both the sports and medical communities. With recent developments in technology and training it is important to educate and organize methodologies on how to help players achieve their goals while preventing potential injuries.
In addition to the screening how does the body function and how does physics apply to the baseball swing. Through proper diagnosis and treatment players can take their individual characteristics and optimize their performance and reduce the rate of injury.
The practitioner’s ability to identify, diagnose, and treat an individual player’s anatomy and physiology is key and paramount in the player’s ability to optimize their performance and reduce injury risk. The players tendencies to load on the medial or lateral side of the foot will have a direct impact on the characteristics of the overall swing. In this section Dr. Klutts will review the pathology and characteristics of each of the foot types of condition and the impact on the swing.

The assessment of biomechanical foot profile in conjunction with movement screenings is very important for the player to understand the direct correlation between lower body movement patterns and the ability to be efficient with the player’s bat path. In this section Dr. Tm Mazer will talk about the movement patterns and techniques to identify the players strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and potential risks that are associated with certain mobility profiles.

This module will focus on cervical mobility and the ability to have both eyes focused on the pitcher and the ball. Participants will also gain an understanding of how the body will adapt and adjust to positioning of the eyes and head throughout the course of the swing. This impact on the swing will be directly related to the different attack angles of the bat and the hands.

This module will instruct the attendees on how arm, wrist, and hand structure and mobility have a direct impact on the bat path and the optimization of the players energy transfer in the swing. This section will also address how the player can prevent upper extremity injuries through proper screening techniques and adaptations in mechanics due to pathology. The attendees will be able to screen, diagnose, and make recommendations for players on equipment and approach.

This section is to provide the participants in this course an overview of the utilization of ground force in the baseball swing. Attendees of the course will be provided with the scientific method of how players generate energy through recoil and how these pressures impact the ability for the player to generate force and transfer of energy efficiently throughout the swing,

In this section the kinematic sequence is reviewed and explained on how the athlete’s efficiency of their kinetic chain works. The kinematic sequence reviews the involvement of how kinetic energy flows from the ground to the hips, shoulders, and hands. This section will also look at what pathology can enhance or limit this process.

In this section Chad Miller will discuss the direct correlation between the utilization of ground forces to create an efficient transfer of energy throughout the kinematic sequence. Attendees of the course will learn that inefficient ground force production is a direct result of limited mobility and pathology of the player. These inefficiencies will also lend to a limited kinematic sequence which will have a direct result on the ability to optimize force production and energy transfer from the bat to the ball.
